A Durham Region Engagement Photographer’s Take on Golden Hour Magic

Spring in Durham Region hits different. The air softens, the light stretches longer, and everything feels like it’s waking up again—perfect timing for engagement sessions that feel effortless, romantic, and real.

This session at Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering is exactly why spring is one of my favourite times to photograph couples.

Why Frenchman’s Bay Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Tucked right along the waterfront in Pickering, Frenchman’s Bay gives you a bit of everything without needing to travel far:

  • Soft sandy beach for relaxed, candid moments

  • Calm water that reflects that golden sunset glow

  • Natural greenery and walking paths for variety

  • Open skies that create clean, cinematic compositions

It’s one of those locations that lets couples just be themselves—no distractions, no pressure.

The Feel: Effortless, Candid, and Connected

What made this session stand out wasn’t just the location—it was how natural everything felt.

From laying barefoot at the edge of the water to quiet in-between moments, nothing here was overly posed. Just movement, laughter, and connection.

That’s always the goal.

The best engagement photos don’t feel like a photoshoot—they feel like a memory you can step back into.

Golden Hour = Everything

We timed this session right before sunset, and that warm spring light did all the heavy lifting:

  • Soft highlights on skin tones

  • Warm, romantic tones across the water

  • Natural backlight that adds depth without harsh shadows

Golden hour in spring is especially clean—less haze, softer contrast, and just enough warmth without feeling heavy.

If you’re planning your session, this is the time to aim for.

What to Wear for a Spring Beach Engagement

This couple nailed it with a simple, timeless look:

  • Light neutrals (whites, creams, soft earth tones)

  • Flowy fabrics that move naturally with the wind

  • Barefoot moments to keep things relaxed and authentic

The key is choosing outfits that don’t compete with the environment—especially at a beach where simplicity wins every time.

Why Engagement Sessions Matter More Than You Think

A lot of couples see engagement photos as a “nice to have.” In reality, they’re one of the most important parts of your wedding experience.

Here’s why:

  • You get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day

  • You build trust with your photographer

  • You learn what feels natural for you as a couple

  • You end up with photos that actually reflect your relationship

By the time your wedding day comes, everything feels easy.

Planning Your Spring Engagement Session in Durham Region

If you’re thinking about doing your engagement session this spring, here are a few quick tips:

  • Book early – spring dates go fast, especially golden hour slots

  • Be flexible with timing – sunset shifts quickly this time of year

  • Lean into the season – softer tones, lighter outfits, natural movement

  • Choose a meaningful location – even better if it feels like you

Whether it’s Frenchman’s Bay, a quiet forest trail, or somewhere that’s part of your story—location matters, but connection matters more.
